Director's Message

"Moving to a cancer-free future"

At the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute (SACRI), our researchers employ a team-based, multi-disciplinary approach to make a difference across all aspects of the cancer care continuum. With expertise ranging from basic to clinical to population, our members synergistically blend complementary skills and knowledge to make groundbreaking discoveries with positive impacts in the lives of cancer patients and their families.

Dr. Stephen Robbins is the Director of SACRI

Dr Stephen Robbins is the Director of SACRI at the University of Calgary. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, holds a Cancer Biology Canada Research Chair, and is an AHFMR Senior Scientist.

Dr. Robbins obtained his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1991 and pursued postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco under the mentorship of Nobel Laureate Dr. J. Michael Bishop. It was at this time that Dr. Robbins developed his passion for cancer biology.

Dr. Robbins' cancer-based research activities include a three-pronged approach:

(1) Examination of the Molecular Mechanisms of Signal Transduction

  • understanding the biochemical circuitry in cells and how this process goes awry in cancer

(2) Functional Genomics and Cancer

  • defining the molecular blueprint of cancer cells

(3) Effector Mechanisms in Inflammation

  • defining how we respond to bacterial infections
